Atlanta, known as the capital of the New South, is the birthplace of Martin Luther King Junior and also a great place for a holiday. Atlanta is a relatively new city - the old one was burnt to the ground in 1864 and not one building survived the blaze. Very few of Atlanta’s current buildings existed before 1915, with only a little in existence before this - nothing in existence now was around pre-1868.
There is much to see and do in Atlanta- it is home to Coca- Cola and the CNN headquarters, and visitors can tour both buildings. Atlantic Public Library features a room devoted to Gone with the Wind author Margaret Mitchell, and the Underground Atlanta is a lively maze of old-fashioned, cobbled, gas-lit streets featuring a diverse mix of markets, shops, bars and restuarants. Atlanta Zoo, home to two rare giant pandas, is also well worth a visit.
The diverse neighbourhoods surrounding Atlanta all offer something different, with many shops, cafes, restaurants and bookstores. The prestigious Buckhead is not to be missed, and features many upmarket boutiques, restaurants, bars and hotels, and some spectacular skyscrapers. Midtown offers many swanky bars and restaurants, and The West End and Little Five Points have many good-value restaurants serving delicious southern cuisine.There is so much to see and do throughout Atlanta, and as a result, many escorted walking tours exist in and around the city.
The weather in Atlanta is generally great throughout the year, with hot summers and mild winters. Temperatures can reach 90°F (33°C) in the summer and stay around 50°F (8°C) in the winter. Rain is frequent throughout the year but this not need be a problem - there is so much to do indoors in Atlanta.

The minimum driving age in Atlanta is 25, so if you are below this you may not be able to hire a car, although some companies are flexible about this. If not, public transport is good, with an integrated bus and train system.
